Organized Labor: Nationwide Strike Over Galamsey Set for October 10, 2024

Organized labor in Ghana, led by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has announced a nationwide strike starting on October 10, 2024, in protest against the government’s handling of illegal mining, known as “Galamsey.”

This action follows widespread frustration over the environmental damage caused by illegal mining, particularly the pollution of water bodies and the destruction of forest reserves.

The strike is set to be indefinite, with workers urged to stay home until their demands, which include declaring a state of emergency in affected areas and the removal of all mining equipment, are met. Despite attempts by President Akufo-Addo to delay the strike, labor unions remain steadfast.

Public support for the strike is strong, with many on social media backing the call for more decisive government action.

If the government fails to address the demands by the deadline, the strike could severely disrupt public and private sector activities across the country.

This protest marks a turning point in the battle against Galamsey, signaling that the environmental crisis is now a major national concern.
