Interviewing him on her talk show Vim Talk, the controversial radio and TV host known for her often loose tongue asked the poet why he would go into poetry after his parents had painstakingly taken him through school. “Is this even a job?” she asked.
While Nana Asase didn’t take offense to the question and seemingly understood it as just she doing her job, some members of Ghana’s poetry community have come out to denounce the interview as demeaning and insulting to the craft of poetry.

One upcoming poet, a student of the University of Ghana who asked to remain anonymous, told OccupyGh.com he didn’t think the interviewer meant any harm with the question, but it still came across as disrespectful. “Questions like these are examples of what poets face on a daily basis” he told us.
While poetry in Ghana has seen a steadfast growth in the past few years and gained more prominence, the art is still regarded by many as nothing more than a hobby, and not worth considering as a legitimate career path.
