Just a day after their release, some of the Stopgalamsey protesters appeared on Captain Smart’s Onua Maakye show, recounting their arrest and the harsh conditions they faced in detention.
One protester shared a particularly distressing encounter with a police officer that left him deeply shaken.
The protester explained that he had asked for permission to use the washroom due to an urgent need to urinate. However, as he approached the facility, a police officer suddenly confronted him and delivered a forceful slap.

The unexpected assault caused the protester to lose control, resulting in him urinating on himself. The officer further intimidated him, threatening to shoot.
The protester’s account explains the mistreatment they endured during their detention, and their appearance on the show aimed to bring attention to the difficulties they faced while advocating against galamsey.
The Stopgalamsey movement is dedicated to combating illegal mining activities that are devastating Ghana’s environment and water resources. The protesters’ experiences raise concerns about police conduct and emphasize the need for reform.
