Growing up in traditional Ghanaian families, we heard a lot of absurd things that, as communities adopted education, we eventually came to comprehend.
We were told all kinds of things by our parents, older siblings, aunts, and uncles, and we also believed them because, who knows, maybe they were true. You do so at your own risk.
We were taught several popular beliefs, such as not singing in the shower, never sweeping at night, never hitting a child with a broom, and never hitting a man with a broom. They were numerous, but we adhered to them out of dread for what may happen if we didn’t.
The most well-known and, should I say, the riskiest of all the urban legends involved washing your face with water that had been left in a mortar. We were informed that after washing one’s face with water left in a mortar overnight, doing so will cause the person to immediately notice a ghost when looking in between his legs.
We don’t yet know who had the courage to attempt this, though. Only in Kumawood films do they attempt to confirm, however in reality, it appears that everyone was terrified since it appeared to be real.
One justification for this, aside from its spiritual undertones, is possibly that it is unclean to wash your face with water that has been left in the mortar and may even have pieces of three days’ worth of fufu trapped in it.
