Ugandan preacher Prophet Samuel Kakande has sparked controversy by asking his congregants to contribute funds for his new Range Rover.
He set a deadline of April 20, 2024, for the contributions and promised a prayer card in return, which he claims will help them acquire their new car by the end of the year.
However, many have criticized the move, questioning the logic of the plan.
Kakande’s plan, dubbed the “Transport Blessing,” involves:
- Deciding he wants a new Range Rover.
- Creating a fundraiser scheme where followers worldwide contribute $300 each.
- Promising a prayer card to each contributor, supposedly helping them get their own new car.
Critics point out the inconsistencies:
- If the prayer cards work, why doesn’t Kakande use one to get his own Range Rover?
- Followers pay real money, while Kakande only offers a prayer card in return.
- With over 50,000 followers, if half contribute $300, Kakande would receive $7.5 million, far exceeding the $200,000 needed for the Range Rover. What happens to the remaining $7.3 million?
Many have expressed disbelief and frustration, feeling that Kakande is taking advantage of his followers.
The incident has sparked a wider conversation about the role of materialism in religion and the responsibility of spiritual leaders towards their congregations.
