Young Man Sentenced To Three Years and Nine Months For Stealing Iron And Fan

A Magistrate Court in Ekiti State has sentenced Saidu Abass, a middle-aged man, to three years and nine months in prison for theft.

Abass was apprehended by the police for stealing various household items, including a fan, pressing iron, and drum set, from a woman’s house.

Inspector Raymond Osas, the police prosecutor, informed the court that Abass unlawfully entered the residence of Mrs. Ademurele Bamidele at Agric Olope in Ado Ekiti. The offences are punishable under Sections 421, 323, 302, and 120(b) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

Abass faced charges of conspiracy, breaking into a dwelling house, stealing, and escaping from lawful custody. The charge sheet detailed that on May 15, 2024, Abass, along with Emmanuel and others now at large, conspired and unlawfully entered Mrs. Bamidele’s home, located behind a gospel church in Agric Olope.

During the theft, they stole an Ox fan, fridge engine, palm oil, fan switch, drum set, iron, microphones, extension socket, and table bell. While Abass was arrested, his accomplices escaped with the stolen items. Abass later escaped from police custody but was rearrested on June 4, 2024.

Inspector Osas urged the court to impose a fitting punishment. Abass, without legal representation, pleaded guilty.

Magistrate Olatomiwa Daramola sentenced Abass to three months imprisonment for conspiracy with a N2,000 option of fine, one year for breaking into a dwelling house with a N3,000 option of fine, two years for stealing with a N5,000 option of fine, and six months for escaping lawful custody with a N2,000 option of fine. The prison terms will run concurrently, while the fines are to be paid consecutively.
