Just In: Men In Zimbabwe Demand Bigger Condom Sizes

Health officials in Zimbabwe in February this year raised concerns about the quality of condoms imported from China into the country.

Men in a Zimbabwean town called Mpandawana Growth Point are demanding bigger sizes of condoms. They say the sizes available in the country are “too small for them”.

TheNew Zimbabwe.com, reports that the men say the condoms burst often during sex. They are worried they could contract sexually transmitted diseases.

The Mpandawana community according to Zimbabwe’s National Aids Council (NAC) is a “hot spot” for new sexually transmitted diseases in the Masvingo province.

Health officials in Zimbabwe in February this year raised concerns about the quality of condoms imported from China into the country.

Zimbabwean officials also said at the time that young people were complaining about the sizes of the imported condoms.

The former health minister David Parirenyatwa had challenged private condom manufactures in the country to produce condoms so as “to address concerns over the size of condoms imported from China”.

At least 109.4 million condoms were distributed in Zimbabwe in 2016. That amounted to about 33 condoms per individual for a year.

The trend in Zimbabwe makes the country one of the five countries that had exceeded the United Nations Population Funds regional mark of 30 male condoms per man per year.

Many Southern African countries are striving to control the HIV and Aids prevalence and the use of condoms is a key strategy.
